Accton and Edge-Core Implements New Design Switches in Open Network

 Accton Technology, a developer and manufacturer of open network switches has open sourced two new data center switch designs: the first open design of 100 Gigabit Ethernet switch for web-scale infrastructure growth and cost optimized 40GbE switch for deployment of current open structures based on 10GbE and 40GbE. Edge-Core Network, a subsidiary of Accton Technology implements these designs in its open network switch product line to help data center operators deploy cost effective, flexible public and private cloud infrastructure.

Edge-Core has announced Wedge-16X top-of-rack switch manufactured by Accton and available from Edge-Core as a bare metal switch to make Facebook Wedge Design available as a Commercial Switch Product. The Wedge-16X with sixteen 40GbE QSFP+ ports is designed specifically for web-scale infrastructures by a data center operator.

Besides this, the company has also announced some initiatives that validate Edge-Core switches for interoperability, ease of installation and support with Network Operating System (NOS), SDN software, optical transceiver and cabling options:

Four Edge-Core data center switches have been certified by UTSA Open Compute Project (OCP) Certification and Solution Laboratory with the OCP Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) requirements. With ONIE certification users can achieve an out-of-box performance with Edge-Core bare-metal switches.

 Availability of Open Network Linux (ONL) on Edge-Core switches through the ONL repository provides a common software platform to customers, software partners and the open network community. ONL is now an OCP approved reference NOS delivering standard set of Linux, basic set of NOS functions,.

Edge-Core implements the ACPI Platform Description (APD) framework on its AS6712-32X 40GbE switch in collaboration with Cumulus Networks, the pilot implementation of APD. The ADP on its switches accelerates the porting, providing additional NOS and application offerings on Edge-Core bare-metal switches.

Edge-Core joins the new open network interoperability initiative of The University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory that starts testing of interoperability of optical transceivers and cables with bare-metal switches.

Accton is contributing new switch designs to OCP. They are:

Edge-CoreAS7700-32X Series: These switches are next generation 100GbE hardware designs configured with thirty-two QSPF28 ports in 1 Unit form factor, with each port supporting 100GbE, 2x50GbE, 40GbE and 4x25GbE or 4x10GbE connections through breakout cables.

Edge-CoreAS6700-32X Series: These switches are 40GbE hardware designs with thirty-two QSFP+ ports in 1U form factor, with each port supporting 40GbE or 4x10GbE connections through breakout cables.
